Guru Parampara

Shobhitha's beloved Guru, Natyakalavathi Smt. Jaya Mani, has been a role model for Shobhitha since her childhood. Smt. Jaya Mani, or more affectionately known as Jaya Aunty, is an accomplished artiste in both Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi styles, and for the last 50 years she has been keeping alive the rich dance tradition of Kancheepuram Ellappa Pillai through her teaching.


Jaya Aunty began her dance training under the veteran master M.D. Venkatesh at the age of 8 and performed her arangetram at the age of 11.   For her continued mastery of dance, she was awarded the title of “Natyakalavathi.”  Jaya Aunty has since choreographed several dance dramas and individual programs including the well-received “Ayarkula Thilakam” in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the SV Temple.  She has performed throughout the world, mesmerizing audiences across 6 continents.  Jaya Aunty has also been a member of several dance troupes such as one led by revered dancers Padmini and Ragini and performed the Ramayana over 100 times all over India. She traveled extensively throughout India with them even performing for the Indian Army during the China- Indian war.


Jaya Aunty is a recipient of several awards including the title “Pride of India” presented by Mayor Tom Murphy and one for promoting art among North American youth presented by Srinivasa Prasad International Foundation for Performing Arts.  Jaya Aunty has also been an adjunct faculty member of Slippery Rock University teaching Bharatanatyam to college students of various backgrounds.


She also had the opportunity to conduct a Bharatanatyam workshop in Australia.  Not only has she been spreading this ancient art in Pittsburgh, but she has reached students abroad as well.
